Hybrid - frieze

A hybrid model

As the Art world is moving online, Frieze London has announced this year a hybrid program of online and offline activities. The fair will take place virtually on its online viewing rooms where collectors will be able to discover 250 exhibitors coming from all around the world. The online presence of Frieze will include an array of events, such as the outdoor sculpture exhibition, online talks and live performances and satellite shows in London galleries in order to maintain the vibrant art scene spirit and continue engaging with the public in London and beyond. The viewing room, which will include Frieze London and Frieze Masters, will be strictly online. Enormous investments have been made in technology in order to offer an innovative and friendly user experience. The Preview Days are invitation-only and will be accessible via the app and web-live platform on the 7th and the 8th of October. The platform will then go live and open to the public from 9 October until 16 October.
The previous edition was an extraordinary success (e.g. visitors coming from all around the world -more than 156 countries) demonstrating that the art world transition to online was possible! This demonstrated that the art world had learned to adapt to the pandemic crisis in a blink of an eye and bolster the resilience in the Art Market amidst economic downturn. Eva Langret, Artistic Director of Frieze London stated : ‘While I could never have imagined that my first fair as Artistic Director would be made in these conditions, I could not be more excited about the presentations, both online and offline, that we’re bringing together for Frieze London and the ingenuity that all our participating artists and galleries have shown. I am particularly excited to introduce Possessions, the section curated by Dr. Zoé Whitley, featuring Vera Frenkel, Mike Cloud and Veronica Ryan; and to bring LIVE, curated by Victor Wang to Cork Street for Frieze Week as well as Frieze Sculpture, curated by Clare Lilley to Regent’s Park. This year promises to bring a global audience online, and participants across London together in support of a community that needs them now more than ever.’

Frieze online

Frieze online - What to expect?

For this edition, new functionalities have been developed by the Frieze team in order to ensure an exceptional experience for the mobile and web-based Frieze Viewing Room platform to Art lovers: a live chat feature, social media integrated sharing functionality, augmented reality, improved searching tool and the option of six virtual spaces designed by Annabelle Selldorf. Galleries will be able to feature up to 36 works within their digital space alongside videos, additional images and text. Similar to the physical fair, 3 major gallery sections will be presented. The first one focusing on young galleries (12 years in business or younger) promoting a platform for young artists named “ Focus”. The second section titled “ Possessions” refers to Frieze London’s themed section curated by the unique Zoé Whitley (Chisenhale Gallery director) focusing on the power of spirituality in Art. Finally, the latest section “ Spotlight” part of Frieze Master curated by Laura Hoptman (The drawing center executive director) which will be dedicated to 20th century visionary artists. World leading galleries will participate in this year's edition (to name a few: White Cube, Lehmann Maupin, Sam Fogg, Goodman Gallery, Gagosian, Marian Goodman Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Xavier Hufkens, Pace Gallery, David Zwirner, Pilar Corrias Gallery, Karma, Massimo De Carlo, Galleria Continua … ). In keeping with this year’s hybrid format, several galleries are presenting online-offline presentations, exhibiting works featured in their viewing room or complementary exhibitions in their gallery spaces. For instance, White Cube will present a specially conceived solo booth of new work by multidisciplinary artist Theaster Gates. In additon, this will be presented as a public installation at White Cube Bermondsey (on 10, 11 and 16 October 2020). Lisson Gallery will present a solo booth by Laure Prouvost with an exhibition of the artist’s work at their Lisson Street Gallery.
