Running list for 2019 worldwide art events - fall

Let's prepare for the marathon: from September to December the Art world is gonna get hot! From London to Nigeria, Miami, and Turin, the most prestigious galleries, the hippest design studios, and the top artists have planned everything to keep you warm during the winter! As the planning looks sporty, we've prepared a running list of the major events worldwide to make you sweat before Christmas!

SEPTEMBER

Affordable Art Fair: Melbourne, September 5–8 9 Nicholson St, Carlton VIC 3053, Melbourne International fair happening in several capitals in the world during the year,  the AAF is the perfect event to discover international emerging artists and to acquire a selection of contemporary paintings, sculptures, photographs and/or prints within a price range of $100 - $12,000.

The Other Art Fair: Los Angeles, September 5–8 Barker Hangar, 3021 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90405 Since 2011, The Other Art Fair - presented by Saatchi Art, and supported by BOMBAY SAPPHIRE - promotes emerging artists in American, Australian and British cities. Trying to differentiate itself from the “other” international fairs, The Other Art Fair creates an immersive experience for art lovers and enables visitors to acquire contemporary arts handpicked by a Committee of art world experts with accessible budgets starting at 150$.

Art Berlin & POSITIONS BERLIN , September 12–15 Tempelhofer Damm 45 Flughafen Tempelhof, Hangar 5, 6, Berlin, Hangar 4 at Berlin-Tempelhof Airport, Berlin Happening in the middle of the Berlin Art Week, Art Berlin and POSITIONS BERLIN presents emerging and established contemporary artists bringing contemporary art alongside Modernist pieces. Split into three sections, the shows invest the magistral national-socialist building of the Tempelhofer airport reconverted in a hipster’s gathering place, Art Berlin creates a vibrant and eclectic space. Including galleries’ exhibitions, live performances, and talks, Art Berlin and Position Berlin attract each year over ten thousand art professionals and art lovers.

Contemporary Istanbul, September 12–15 Istanbul Congress Center (ICC) and Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC), Istanbul Participating with other Middle East fairs to question the duopoly Europe - US regarding Art events, “Contemporary Istanbul” maintains its major place within the contemporary art world and defies the tense geopolitical climate by mixing international within Turkish galleries. Featuring 80 galleries from 21 countries, Contemporary Istanbul is expecting this year to receive above 75,000 visitors.

FNB ART JOBURG, September 13–15 Sandton Convention Centre, Exhibition Hall 1, Johannesburg FNB ART JOBURG straightens the weight of contemporary African art within the actual scene and shows emerging artists from the continent and diaspora. For its 12th edition, FNB will host galleries’ exhibitions, art curators’ talk, and various workshops.

Beirut Art Fair, September 18–22 Seaside Arena, Hall 3 at Beirut New Waterfront, Beirut Sustaining a global reach while entertaining a particular affinity with the Middle Eastern and North African scene, Beirut Art Fair is one of the major contemporary art fairs in the region. Reuniting 50 galleries and about 400 contemporary artists, it celebrates its ten-year anniversary.

Art Rio, September 19–22 Marina da Gloria, Rio de Janeiro Aiming to place Rio as an important spot for contemporary art in South America, ArtRio invites mainly Latin American galleries but also international ones to present contemporary artists since 2011.

ARTBO, September 19–22 Carrera 37 # 24-67 Corferias, Bogota Since 2004, Artbo brings together international galleries, emerging artists and players from the cultural scene. For its 15th edition, ARTBO covers different formats and media, providing the public a great experience of South American art.

Unseen Amsterdam, September 20–22 Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam With a fair, a magazine and a web platform, “Unseen Amsterdam” aims to create a major meeting for contemporary photography in Holland since its first edition in 2012. Mixing several mediums such as photography, videos, sculpture, and VR, Unseen has evolved into the rhythm of contemporary creation. With 25,000 visitors showing last year, it became an important meeting for both young and confirmed collectors.

Photofairs Shanghai, September 20–22 Shanghai Exhibition Center, Shanghai With above 50 leading galleries from 15 countries across the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, PHOTOFAIRS will present collectors with classic masterpieces, contemporary photography, bulky installations and cutting-edge innovations within visual art from around 150 Chinese and global artists.

Affordable Art Fair New York, September 26–29 125 West 18th Street, Metropolitan Pavilion, New York Happening twice a year in New York, The AAF presents emerging artists working with painting, sculpture, printing showcased by 74 local, national and international galleries. The AFF is present in about 15 capitals worldwide and allows collectors to find pieces of their desire for less than $12k.

Swab Barcelona, September 26–29 Plaça de Carles Buïgas, 8 Pavellon Italiano Feria Barcelona, Barcelona For its 12th edition, Swab Barcelona will invite 70 galleries, curating a selection of 300 emerging local and international artists. Trying to innovate the classic contemporary art fair format, Swab will present a special section focusing on positioning the traditional paper’s technique as a contemporary medium. 

Vienna Contemporary, September 26–29 Marx Halle, Vienna With about 100 Galleries and 300 artists, Vienna Contemporary invites for its 4th edition above 25,000 visitors to discover the latest trends in contemporary art from the central and eastern Europe scene.

PAD London Art + Design, September 30–October 6 Berkeley Square, London In the vibrant heart of Mayfair, PAD London attracts each year an interesting mix of international bankers, art consultants and established collectors to discover the cutting-edge selection of the 70 international galleries. Offering a refined combination of Antics, Modern, Decorative, and Tribal as Design furniture, PAD is obviously an unavoidable event from the artistic “rentrée”.

OCTOBER

Frieze London, October 3–6 South Regents Park, London Initially founded by the creators of Frieze Magazine, the Frieze Art Fair attracts above 68,000 art lovers on contemporary art each year since 2003. Both in NYC and London, we are looking forward to discovering the 2019 panel of the 170 galleries’ selections and to attend collectors talks and artist-led performances. 

Frieze Masters, October 3–6 Regents Park, London Frieze Masters propose to discover classic masterpieces of art: 130 leading modern and historical galleries from around the world will showcase art from the ancient era and Old Masters to the late 20th century. 

1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, October 3–6 Somerset House, London Founded in 2013, 1-54 aims to reveal African contemporary artists on the international art scene with annual editions in London, New York (since 2015) and Marrakech (since 2018).  1-54 will present 45 carefully-selected international galleries, showcasing the works of 140 multidisciplinary artists of established and emerging profile. With 18,000 visitors recorded last year, 1-54 has been contributing to radiate African art on the international scene.

British Art Fair, October 3–6 Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York’s HQ, Kings Road, London The British Art Fair presents the best of Modern British art with key artists from the 20th and 21st centuries ; gallerists may be of any age or nationality, but the art must only be British. Established in 1988, the 30 years old fair has been revamped since its acquisition in 2018 by Robert and Johnny Sandelson (i.e Saatchi) who have ambitious plans to breathe new life into the event and to build the brand globally.

Art Market Budapest, October 3–6 1024 Budapest, Kis Rókus u. 16-20 (Millenáris), Budapest With about 60 galleries, mainly from Central and Eastern Europe, this fair brings freshness within the European contemporary art scene. 

Korea International Art Fair, October 4–7 COEX Convention Center, Seoul, South Korea Marking its 18th anniversary, KIAF is a key event for the Contemporary Art World in the vibrant pacific Asian scene. Showing both international and local established galleries, the KIAF elects each year a guest country of honor and introduces its galleries and artists to the domestic art market. 

Texas Contemporary, October 10–13 1001 Avenida De Las Americas, George R. Brown Convention Center, Hall A, Houston 70 top international, national, and regional galleries, Texas Contemporary contributes to place Houston as a new hub for Contemporary Art and Design in the US. Many galleries came from Venezuela, Estonia, Scotland, Italy and United Kingdom, to show top modern and contemporary art to a peppy Texas’ collector community.

ACAF (Accessible Art Fair), October 10–13 *Palais des Beaux-Arts, Bozar Brussels * The ACAF aims to give the opportunity to self-represented artists to show their works. They are carefully selected by a panel of experts coming from the auctions and the curating world and bring a fresh eye on the art fairs concept by merging the dealer and the creator. Small fun fact, Simon de Purry (Phillips) will be DJ for the opening!

ArtVerona, October 11–13 Viale del Lavoro 8 Veronafiere, Halls 11 & 12, Verona, Italy After 15 editions, ArtVerona proves its great influence on the Italian art market. With 150 international galleries, Art Verona is one of the biggest events for Contemporary, modern and art & Antiques sectors.

ASIA NOW: Paris Asian Art Fair, October 16–20 9 Avenue Hoche, Paris ASIA NOW, comes back in Paris for its 5th edition celebrating the diversity of Asia’s contemporary art scene with both established and new galleries (younger than 5 years old). Aiming to bring a new format of the art fair, Asia Now articulates itself around a “special program” lead by a recognized curator. This year Xiaorui Zhu-Nowell, assistant curator at the Guggenheim will celebrate digital native artists whose works engage with challenges of technology and media evolution. This year, ASIA NOW will introduce designers working on day to day objects fitting with the people's neo urban lifestyles.

FIAC, October 17–20, France Grand Palais, Petit Palais & Hors les Murs, Paris Founded in 1974 in Paris, the FIAC is THE art event to go! The most prestigious international galleries present the finest examples of artistic creation since the turn of the twentieth century. In the splendor of the Grand Palais, the 200 exhibitors will show paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, videos, performances, and digital arts to the most prominent art collectors and investors. Don’t miss the FIAC OFF’s forty sculptures and installations presented by some in the most prestigious locations in Paris: in the Petit Palais, on the Avenue Winston Churchill (FIAC Project), in the Tuileries Gardens, on the Place Vendôme, on the Place de la Concorde, and in the Musée National Eugène Delacroix (FIAC Hors Les Murs).

TEFAF New York Fall, October 27–31 Park Avenue Armory, New York The New York’s effervescence provides a perfect alternative to the Maastricht’s Tefaf overseas. New York’s TEFAF allows a vital transatlantic meeting ground for a global community of dealers, collectors, curators, interior designers, and art-and-antiques enthusiasts. For its third edition, the TEFAF will focus on fine and decorative arts from antiquity to 1920.

SOFA: EXPO Chicago, October 31–November 3 600 East Grand Avenue, Festival Hall at Navy Pier, Chicago The Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) Fair in Chicago is dedicated to three-dimensional art and design presented by galleries. Produced by the same organization than Art Basel and TEFAF Maastricht, SOFA invites 80 dealers, foresees 35,000 people and generate $15-20M.

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER

Artissima, November 1–3 Via Giacomo Matte Trucco 70, Turin Since its creation in 1994, Artissima has been mixing international and local players with a focus on experimentation and research. In addition to the fair, Artissima is also composed of three art sections, headed by a board of international curators and museum directors, devoted to emerging artists and pioneers of contemporary art.

ART X LAGOS 2019, November 1–3 Lagos, Nigeria Art, music, fashion, and commerce are thriving amid the chaos of Lagos, sprawling megacity of 17.5 million inhabitants. Within the city’s effervescence, a new generation of artists entrepreneurs, mainly women, are boosting the art scene in West Africa. With about 20 African galleries exhibiting, art curators leading projects, artists and collectors giving talks, Art X Lagos is considered as the London Frieze of West Africa.

Paris Photo, November 7–10 Grand Palais, Paris First major happening within art photography and art publishing, Paris Photo is welcoming for its 23rd edition, 200 established and emergent galleries, art editors and art book dealers to show historic and contemporary masterpieces from both emerging and well-known artists. With a large range of talks and workshops, Paris photo aims to engage visitors with the history and the evolution of photography.

Young International Artists: P/CAS Paris Contemporary Art Show, November 7–11 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris P/CAS takes place in the scope of the Parisian’s photo month. Bringing about 20,000 visitors each year since 2010, P/CAS is a great “rendez-vous” to discover new trends in contemporary photography, design, sculpture and is an exciting spot to attend cool performances. The show is running in Paris, Lille, Brussels, Basel and Maastricht.

West Bund Art & Design Fair, November 7–10 Xuhui District West Bund Art Center, Shanghai Established in 2014, West Bund Art & Design features more than 100 leading galleries from Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America at West Bund Art Center. The fair provides a platform for international exhibitors to showcase the finest quality of modern and contemporary art in Shanghai. With exhibitions and art events offered by museums and galleries in the city, West Bund has made November’s Shanghai a permanent fixture on the global art calendar. 

ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, November 7–10 Shanghai Exhibition Center No.1000 Middle Yan An Road, Shanghai Established in 2013, ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair features renowned galleries and organizations, creating an international meeting for dealers, artists, collectors, sponsors, museums and non-profit organizations. Endeavoring to stimulate creative thoughts and cross-cultural dialogues, ART021 aims to promote local resources with a global perspective.

Fine Art Paris, November 13–17 Carrousel du Louvre, Paris Created in 2017 by the Salon du Dessin’s organizers and in association with Paris Tableau, Fine Arts Paris is a specialized art fair dedicated to the Fine Arts from Antiquity to today. It welcomes about 40 prestigious international galleries showing old masters and modern art within a museum atmosphere.

Affordable Art Fair: Hamburg, November 14–17 Hamburg Exhibition Hall, Messeplatz 1, Hamburg, Germany Same concept described above.

The Salon Art & Design Fair, November 14–18 Park Avenue Armory, New York Salon Art + Design returns for its eighth edition presenting an eclectic mix of historic and contemporary collectible design and fine art. Enhanced by blue-chip 20th century and contemporary art, the Salon will feature 56 leading art and design international galleries encouraged to create immersive environments mirroring today’s lifestyles.

Art Düsseldorf, November 15–17 Areal Bohler Hansaallee, Dusseldorf Taking advantage of its unique location, Art Dusseldorf attracts many collectors from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg around contemporary art (1945 - 2019) since 2017. Above half of the 90 galleries showing comes from the region (Germany and Benelux), one third from North Rhine-Westphalia and most of the international galleries from Europe. Even though the fair plans to further open the market to international galleries, it keeps in its shows and atmosphere, the regional ‘DNA’.

ABU DHABI ART, November 21–23 Saadiyat Cultural District, UAE Abu Dhabi Art is offering a large range of exhibitions, performances, and workshops bringing together international galleries, artists, cultural thinkers, collectors, and visitors. The fair takes place since its creation in 2007 in the cultural district, home of Louvre Abu Dhabi, and planned location for the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

MECA International Art Fair, November 21–24 San Juan, Puerto Rico MECA is a quite new fair, initiated in 2017, creating a meeting point for the art markets of Latin America, the United States, and the Caribbean. It consists of 30 international and local galleries’ exhibitions, 3 special projects and 8 proposals for emerging artists and independent curators. 

Art Thessaloniki, November 21–24 Thessaloniki International Exhibition & Congress Centre, Greece With important geopolitical position between the East and the West, Thessaloniki builds on its cultural legacy by inviting European and Asian galleries specialized in contemporary art, displaying paintings, sculptures, photographs, mixed medias, installations, and videos.

Cologne Fine Art Fair, November 21–24 Koelnmesse, Messeplatz, Cologne Founded in 1970, Cologne Fine Art & Design celebrates its half-century anniversary of being one of the leading fairs in Germany for Art, Antiques, and Design. From ancient times to today, the fair expects 15 000 visitors and invites 90 leading galleries and dealerships selected by a vetting committee of fine art galleries and museum professionals.

Art Basel Miami Beach, December 5–8 Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami At the nexus of North and Latin America, Basel Miami features 250 leading international galleries and 4,000 artists within the glamorous Miami Beach. With a selection of cutting-edge paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film and digital art, Basel Miami attracts each year around 70,000 art curators, collectors, millionaires, and art lovers to discover artworks ranging from edited pieces by young artists to museum-caliber masterpieces. 

Art Miami, December 3–8 One Herald Plaza, Art Miami Pavilion, Miami The vibrant Art Miami hosts successively numerous exciting contemporary art happenings from South Beach to Wynwood and new neighborhoods such as Little Haiti. The Miami Art Week is both an impressive and overwhelming event including CONTEXT Miami, SCOPE Miami, Aqua Art Miami, Pinta Miami, Untitled Miami, NADA Miami, and Pulse Miami, melting art shows, transactions and networking within a hassle-free vibe - encouraging rest at the beach and several parties at night. Art Miami is bringing to the art world something quirky, funky and playful, often adopting the pop-art style!
