Life@Convelio: Estevan on Art Logistics from the Inside

Estevan joined Convelio after managing cruise logistics across French Atlantic ports, bringing experience from a different context shaped by the same fundamentals: coordination under pressure, trust between partners, and zero tolerance for the unexpected. Today, as Operations Design and Marketplaces Team Lead, he oversees the chain that connects Convelio's marketplace clients to delivery.

Most people think about art logistics in terms of distance. Paris to Hong Kong. London to New York. But the real complexity is rarely about geography. It lives in the handoffs: the moment a piece leaves a gallery wall, gets assessed, crated, cleared through customs, loaded, tracked, and received on the other side of the world. Every one of those transitions carries risk, and every one requires someone who understands what can go wrong.

Estevan, can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you into global operations and logistics?

I have always been drawn to logistics; the complexity, the coordination, and the satisfaction of having full control over every step of the chain. I’m passionate about connecting with people across the globe, exchanging good practices, and building strong, lasting partnerships.

My first experience in logistics was with Intercruises Shoreside & Port Services, where I managed cruise logistics across French Atlantic ports. It gave me a deep understanding of supplier coordination and customer satisfaction - two pillars that still guide my work today.

What attracted you to the art logistics sector specifically?

What immediately resonated with me was the chance to bring together precision logistics and the rich emotion and storytelling behind every artwork. In art logistics, we don’t just move objects. We protect creativity and culture. I was inspired by the challenge of delivering exceptional care, attention to detail, and respect for each piece’s unique value.

What does a typical day look like for you as Operations Design & Marketplaces Team Lead?

Every day is dynamic. I usually start with a team check-in to align on priorities and shipment progress. From there, my time is divided between coordinating with marketplaces, local partners, and our operations teams to ensure art pieces reach their destinations smoothly. I also focus on optimizing our processes, identifying efficiency gains, and supporting my team in achieving consistent performance. It’s a balance of people management, problem-solving, and process design.

Can you walk us through how an artwork moves through Convelio’s logistics process?

It begins with collection from a design gallery or collector’s location, followed by a thorough condition check and museum-grade crating at our Le Bourget facility. Once secured, each shipment is dispatched through our trusted airline network to their destination. At every stage, we prioritize transparency, safety, and efficiency; ensuring each piece is handled with the care it deserves.

How do you ensure a high level of customer satisfaction in such a complex field?

The key is empathy and anticipation. We take the time to understand our clients’ needs, the context of their projects, and the concerns they may have. By being proactive and transparent, we’re able to prevent most issues before they arise. I also believe in simplifying complexity, creating solutions that make clients feel confident that their artwork is in good hands.

What’s the most unusual or memorable shipment you’ve handled?

One of the most memorable shipments I’ve managed was an extremely valuable piece weighing over two tons, destined for Hong Kong. It required a high level of security throughout the entire process. From pick-up with GPS tracking, to international premium crating, and constant monitoring during freight operations at CDG Airport with fine art supervision. Every step had to be perfectly synchronized. Seeing it successfully dispatched was a proud moment for the whole team.

What makes Convelio different from other logistics companies you’ve seen?

Our blend of technology, team synergy, and adaptability. Convelio combines advanced tools with a truly collaborative culture. We move fast, stay flexible, and always aim to offer a seamless experience to our clients and partners.

How do you see the art logistics space evolving in the next few years?

The art logistics industry is becoming increasingly connected and tech-driven. AI and data analytics will play a major role in predicting risks, optimizing routes, and improving customer visibility. I also see sustainability becoming a stronger focus, finding eco-friendly solutions without compromising quality. Overall, the future is about making fine art transport smarter, faster, and greener.

What advice would you give to galleries or collectors when shipping valuable works?

I’d recommend taking a moment to appreciate what happens behind the scenes when moving valuable art. It’s never just transport, it’s a carefully orchestrated process of preparation, communication, and trust. Choosing specialized, reliable partners like Convelio isn’t just helpful - it makes all the difference.

When asked for the best advice he has received, Estevan's answer was simple: stay curious and keep learning. In an industry where routes shift, regulations evolve, and no two shipments are identical, that instinct is more than a personal philosophy. It is an operational necessity.

From cruise ports on the Atlantic to fine art crating at Le Bourget, the thread running through Estevan's career is the same: a conviction that the logistics behind valuable items deserve the same care as the items themselves.
