Life @Convelio - Nicolo's onboarding at Convelio

Nicolo joined Convelio in September for a 6-month internship as an Operations Intern in the team in charge of the US launch. In this interview, he talks about his experience of a full-remote onboarding at Convelio.

What leads you here?

I’ve always been passionate about entrepreneurship and dreamt about working in the United States one day. Being part of a fast growing startup like Convelio and helping them launch the US division was therefore a great opportunity to combine both my personal interests and my career goals.

What is your job, what are your missions?

I am part of the US operations team. I’m mainly in charge of the suppliers’ acquisition in all 50 States and their onboarding on our community platform. Recently I started working on the Last Mile team dealing with the exportation part of a fine art shipment as well as supporting the development of our pricing strategy.

What is the onboarding program like at Convelio?

Complete and immersive. In just over a week you are introduced to all Convelio’s departments and the people who work in them. It’s a great chance to understand how the company works and meet a lot of people that you may not have the opportunity to get to know otherwise as a fresh newcomer.

What did you learn through Convelio’s Welcome Training?

It would be complicated to sum up in a few words all I’ve learned during a week-long program so I’ll just pick the two things that struck me the most: how passionate everyone is and how fascinating and extremely interesting it is to work at the intersection of technology and the art world.

How did Covid and Convelio’s remote work policy impact your onboarding?

I don’t think my onboarding process was impacted much, at least not in a negative way. Firstly, I knew what to expect because the program for my first week was sent in advance. At the same time, if I had any doubt or I wanted to explore certain topics further I could find all the relevant information on Notion, a database with everything you need to know about Convelio. Finally, even though the office was certainly less crowded than usual during my first day, I still had the opportunity to meet a few people and have lunch with them. Adding this social piece makes any beginning a great one.

Did anything surprise you throughout your onboarding process?

The onboarding process is made of multiple sessions on Google Meet that involve the heads of all departments and is repeated almost every 2 weeks so that all newcomers are on the same page. I find impressive the dedication and time Convelio invests in training all its employees and in making them discover the company’s culture and values.

What is like working within a team located in different countries?

Very exciting and it allows us to be super responsive to our customers and partners and process orders almost 24 hours a day. It’s just a little complicated to organise online lunches together when all members are from different time zones but we still manage to find time all together !

What advice would you give to someone anxious about working in a remote-first environment company?

First, take advantage of all the opportunities you are given to meet new people: online coffees, buddy program … Then, if possible, try not to work in your bedroom because the way from your desk to your bed is very short.

Can you share a fun fact you experienced during your adventure at Convelio?

“Uno” nights on houseparty with all the members of our team connecting from different places around the world: Paris, London, New York, Seekonk (Massachusetts).
